COMMENT

オメガのレジェンド、スピードマスター4thの前期モデルです。（後期モデルはこちら）NASAの正式採用となり、「PROFESSIONAL」の名が文字盤に登場しています。セントラル・ボワテ（CB=Centrale Boites）製ケースはノンポリッシュで、タキメーターベゼルも当時ものです。

特にベゼルディスクの状態は良好で、グレーに変化している様子は感動的でさえあります。文字盤も良いエイジングを見せている上に、アップライトのΩマーク下の文字が恐ろしく鮮明で思わずうっとりいてしまいます。また、貴重なキャタピラブレスも付いています。3rdからのアップグレードは、リュウズガードのためケースが左右非対称に、ラグがツイストしたデザインになりました。5thモデルとの違いとしては文字盤のΩがアップライトでムーブメントにはcal.321が用いられていることです。

Cal.321は後のCal.861のカム式と違い、ピラーホイール式のため、コスト高で、チラネジテンプに巻き上げヒゲと高級仕様です。これこそがスピードマスターです。

BRAND

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

COMMENT

This is a Speedmaster 4th model, an early version. It was formally adopted by NASA and bears the inscription "PROFESSIONAL" on the dial. The case, made by Centrale Boites (CB), is non-polished, and the tachymeter bezel is original from that time.

Particularly noteworthy is the excellent condition of the bezel disc, which has turned grey over time, a truly impressive transformation. The dial also exhibits fine aging, with the Ω symbol and lettering below it remaining remarkably sharp, almost mesmerizing. Additionally, it comes with the rare "1450 kamaboko bracelet" from that era.

This model marks an evolution from the 3rd version, with asymmetrical case due to the addition of crown guards and twisted lugs. Unlike the 5th model, the Ω on the dial is upright, and it features the cal.321 movement, known for its high-quality craftsmanship and costly pillar-wheel construction.

BRAND

While today the Speedmaster is synonymous with space exploration, it was originally conceived as a pure motor racing timepiece. It was the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than the dial. Introduced in 1959, it underwent minor changes, such as switching from an aluminium bezel to a black base and changing the shape of the hands from arrow to alpha, enhancing legibility. Chosen by NASA for its resilience in extreme conditions, the Speedmaster defeated formidable rivals to become the official watch for space missions. Its association with the first moon landing in 1969 further solidified its legendary status.
