COMMENT

1969年から発売された世界初の自動巻クロノグラフ時計。初版のエルプリメロ、MARK1です。この時から既にデザインが完成されています。文字盤を構成するインデックス、針夜光、ほぼ全ての部位が丸と四角形のみで構成されています。カレンダー枠だけ微妙に四角形から崩されており、インダイヤル脇に置かれているにも関わらず、存在感を放つ絶妙なバランス感です。インダイヤルカラーはシルバー、ブラック、ブルー。ダイヤルはツートンでホワイトとチャコールグレーとそれぞれが異なる色であるにも関わらず洗練された統一感があります。ケースの仕上げはヘアラインと鏡面で、お互いの良さを引き出し合うかのように、艶の有無による振り分けの配置が素晴らしく、ビシッとハマっています。注目すべき点は文字盤幅の大きさです。ケースサイズぎりぎりまで取られており、ゼニスの挑戦心のようなものが感じ取れます。

ケースの状態はノンポリッシュで小傷すらほとんど見当たらない奇跡的な状態です。リューズはオリジナルのものが付いており、プッシュボタンは使用感が見られません。酷使されてこなかったことが判ります。 ラグのエッジが立っており面取りがはっきり分けられています。針やインデックスのトリチウムがベージュに現存しています。黒ずみしている個体が多い中でベージュがここまで残っているのはとても重要な評価のポイントとなります。

1969年から1971年の3年間にわたって生産されたRef.A386ですが、その生産数は全体で4500本、初版のMARK1に関しては500本以下と推定されています。MARK1は後年のものと比べ、ケース上面の鏡面部とラグの境が溝のないシームレスな造りになっています。ノンポリッシュで状態が良いからそ最大限に楽しめる意匠です。またケースが薄く、ケースバックのデザインが大きく異なるのが特徴です。現行の数ある名作と言われる時計のルーツとなったお品です。ゼニスの歴史上、最重要機種と言っても過言ではない、記念碑的作品です。

COMMENT

This is the world's first automatic chronograph watch released in 1969. It's the inaugural edition of the El Primero, the MARK1. Even at that time, the design was already perfected. The indices, luminous hands, and almost all components of the dial are composed solely of circles and squares. The calendar frame is subtly shifted from a square shape, positioned beside the sub-dials, yet it exudes a striking balance. The dial colours come in silver, black, and blue. Despite each dial being two-toned with white and charcoal grey, there's a sophisticated sense of unity. The case finish, combining brushed and polished surfaces, complements each other as if bringing out the best in one another, with a fantastic distribution of gloss enhancing their appeal. The noteworthy aspect is the width of the dial, stretching almost to the edges of the case, hinting at Zenith's daring spirit.

The case's condition is miraculous, with hardly any scratches evident and no signs of polishing. The original crown is intact, and there's no noticeable wear on the push buttons. It's clear it hasn't been heavily used. The lug edges are sharp, with distinct chamfers. The tritium on the hands and indices has aged to a beige hue, a crucial point of evaluation amidst many specimens where it has darkened considerably.

Produced from 1969 to 1971 over a span of three years, the Ref.A386 had a total production of 4500 units, with the MARK1 initial edition estimated to be fewer than 500 units. Compared to later versions, the MARK1 features a seamless transition between the polished upper surface of the case and the lugs, without any visible seam. Its non-polished finish allows one to fully appreciate its design. Additionally, the case is thin, and the case back design is notably different. This piece is considered the foundation of many renowned timepieces in circulation today. It stands as a monument in Zenith's history, arguably one of its most significant models.
