COMMENT

1978年に誕生したサントスシリーズの中でも、本モデルRef.2961は角形の「サントスカレ」、オクタゴン、ラウンドの3種のケースバリエーションのうち、もっとも象徴的なコンビ仕様にあたります。1987年に登場する「ガルベ」以前の初期仕様であり、ブレスレットには平面的なカットが施された初期型リンクを採用。わずかに艶を帯びたポーセリンカラーのダイヤルには、カルティエらしいローマ数字、ミニッツトラック、そして深いブルーのスチールバトン針が組み合わされています。ムーブメントには自動巻Cal.2671を搭載し、ボックスと無記名ギャランティーペーパーが付属します。

ケースは未仕上げながらも、傷が極めて少なく当時のプロポーションを良好に維持しています。ホワイトダイヤルはノンクラックのミントコンディションで、非常に希少な個体です。ブルースチール針はエイジングの兆候がなく、鮮やかで深みのあるブルーを保っています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

ケースを留めるビスの意匠は、飛行機の機体を接合するリベット構造に着想を得たものであり、全体のフォルムには航空機のような滑らかさと精密なシャープさが共存しています。サントスが持つエレガンスと機能性の融合は、カルティエのデザイン哲学を最もよく表す一例であり、時を経ても色褪せない普遍の美を感じさせる一本です。

ビス留めのケースは飛行機のパーツを繋ぐネジがモチーフで、機体をイメージしてダイヤルなどの角がまるみを帯びたデザイン。現在ではジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初。アルベルト・サントス・デュモンという飛行家からの「飛行中に手を離さずに見ることができる時計がほしい。」という依頼が誕生のきっかけで、「サントス」の名を冠した腕時計が1911年に一般発売されました。

COMMENT

Among the various models introduced with the launch of the Santos collection in 1978, the Ref.2961 represents the most iconic two-tone configuration within the trio of case designs—square (Carré), octagonal, and round. This is the early, pre-“Galbée” specification, featuring the first-generation flat-cut bracelet links. The slightly lustrous porcelain-tone dial displays Cartier’s signature Roman numerals, a precise minute track, and elegant blued steel baton hands. It houses the automatic Cal.2671 movement and comes with its original box and unsigned guarantee paper.

The case remains unpolished yet exceptionally well-preserved, showing minimal signs of wear and maintaining its original, sharp proportions. The white dial is free of cracks and stands in mint condition—an exceedingly rare example. The blued steel hands show no signs of aging and retain their rich, deep hue. The screw-mounted case of the Santos was inspired by the bolts used in aircraft construction, and its softly rounded dial and case edges reflect the contours of an aircraft’s fuselage. Though Cartier is now best known as a premier jeweler, it was also a pioneer in watchmaking—credited with creating one of the first wristwatches in 1904. The watch was developed at the request of famed aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a timepiece that could be read without removing his hands from the controls. In 1911, the “Santos” model was made available to the public, marking a significant chapter in the history of horology.
