COMMENT

直径40mmのディスコヴォランテケースを採用し、3ピース構造ならではの立体感が際立ちます。ベゼルからミドルケースへと高さを持たせたステップ造形が特徴で、視覚的なボリュームに対してダイヤルの存在感をいっそう引き立てます。ダイヤルはブラックミラー。ロゴはプリントで、アラビアインデックスとミニッツはシルバートーンのギルトです。ユニバーサル社製Cal.262を搭載しています。ラグはバネ棒式ではなく固定式で、ケースの下を沿っています。バックルは当時のステイブライトです。

ブラックミラーダイヤルの艶が揃っており、ミラー特有の奥行きを楽しめます。プリントのロゴ、アラビア数字、ミニッツトラックはいずれも視認性が保たれ、スモールセコンドの同心円仕上げは明瞭です。ケースはステップ形状のエッジを効かせており、年式を考慮すると殆ど使用されていないと言ってよいものです。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

ディスコヴォランテ（“空飛ぶ円盤”の意匠）はアールデコ期のデザインとして知られ、ラグを視覚から消してケースを円盤のように見せる発想は、名門各社の作例でも語られます。その多くが34〜36mm前後のサイズ感で作られた中で、本作は40mmのオーバーサイズという点が際立ちます。年代、サイズ、コンディションが揃う個体は限られ、同系統の中でも特に希少性を感じさせる一本です。

BRAND

ユニバーサル・ジュネーブの歴史は二人の時計師、エミーユ・デコームとジョルジュ・ペレによって1894年スイスで創業されたところから始まる。高級感溢れるデザインウォッチや複雑時計の製造を得意とし、クロノグラフの名品＜コンパックス＞を開発したことで、その名を時計史に刻んだ名門のブランド。

COMMENT

This piece features a 40mm Disco Volante case whose sculptural presence is enhanced by its three-piece construction. The stepped architecture, rising from bezel to mid-case, creates a distinctive profile that amplifies the visual impact of the dial. The dial is finished in black mirror, with printed branding, silver-tone gilt Arabic numerals, and a matching minute track. It is powered by Universal Genève’s Cal.262. The fixed-bar lugs curve beneath the case, and the buckle is an original Staybrite example from the period.

The black mirror dial retains a uniform gloss, allowing the characteristic depth of mirror finishing to be fully appreciated. The printed logo, Arabic numerals, and minute track remain crisp and legible, while the concentric finish of the small seconds is clearly preserved. The case maintains sharp step-bezel edges and shows virtually no signs of wear relative to its age. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The Disco Volante—literally “flying disc”—is a hallmark of Art Deco–era design. Conceived to visually conceal the lugs and present the case as a seamless disc, the concept appears among several major maisons of the time. While most examples were produced in the 34–36mm range, this oversized 40mm interpretation stands out for its bold proportions. The combination of period, scale, and condition makes this a particularly scarce and compelling specimen within its category.

Universal Genève traces its origins to 1894, when watchmakers Émile Descombes and Georges Perret established the company in Switzerland. Celebrated for its refined design language and expertise in complicated watchmaking, the maison secured its place in horological history through icons such as the “Compax” chronographs. Universal Genève remains esteemed among collectors for the timeless elegance and technical sophistication of its creations.
