BREITLING TOP TIME Pulsation Dial Ref.2002

COMMENT

COMMENT

This Top Time distills a clean, sport-oriented aesthetic to its essentials and belongs to the generation that transitioned from the early monocoque case to a water-resistant snap-back construction. The dial features a silver sunburst finish with a disciplined layout centered on bar indexes and straight baton hands. Along the outer edge, a pulsation scale marked “GRADUATION POUR 15 PULSATIONS” is subtly incorporated, adding a quiet note of instrument-like functionality. Within a series often defined by panda dials and vivid graphic elements, this pared-back expression is notably rare, allowing the quality of the finishing and the balance of the layout to speak directly. The watch is powered by the hand-wound Valjoux 7730 chronograph movement.

The case shows minor marks consistent with storage, though there is no sense of distortion in its overall proportions. The thick lugs provide a strong sense of volume, reinforcing the crisp presence of the exterior lines. The dial is in mint condition, with the sunburst texture preserved evenly across the surface. The luminous material has aged to a calm beige tone, harmonizing naturally with the overall palette. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Introduced in the 1960s as a line aimed at a younger generation, the Top Time was valued for its design freedom and rich variety. It was offered in a wide range of materials, from solid gold and gold-filled to stainless steel, with equally diverse dial treatments, earning recognition as a series that resisted being confined to a single formula. Within that context, this example stands out for its clear emphasis on function and proportion over decoration. The composed character of a dress-leaning chronograph coexists with the measured presence of the pulsation scale, resulting in a watch that reflects its era while integrating naturally into everyday wear.

Breitling traces its origins to 1884, when a workshop dedicated to complicated watchmaking was established in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Its founder, Léon Breitling, was highly gifted in chronograph construction and earned numerous awards at international exhibitions, bringing widespread recognition to the name. From an early stage, he foresaw the growth of aviation and committed to supporting the industry through the production of timepieces and instruments for aircraft. His vision was carried forward by his son Gaston Breitling, who made significant contributions to aviation history, including the development of the world’s first wrist-worn chronograph. Having firmly established its reputation as a “chronograph specialist,” Breitling continues to be recognized worldwide as a prestigious manufacture with a lasting legacy.
