1959年頃に製造された、初期型のセイコー ロードマーベル Ref.J14039です。ロードマーベルは、マーベルを基礎として1958年に誕生した当時の最高級モデル。グランドセイコーが登場する以前のセイコーにおいて、精度、仕上げ、外装のすべてを高い水準で追求した時計でした。本品は厚さ80ミクロンの14K金張りを施した、丸みのある通称「はまぐりケース」を採用。細身のベゼルと直線的なラグによって、クラシカルでありながら力強さのある輪郭に仕上げられています。

シルバーホワイトのダイヤルには、筆記体の「Seiko Lord Marvel」と「Diashock 23 Jewels」を印刷ではなく彫り込みで表現。多面に仕上げたアップライトのバーインデックスと、中央に鋭い稜線を持つドーフィンハンドが、光の角度に応じて立体的に輝きます。6時側に配された星形のマークは、金無垢製の植字を用いた上級仕様の「SD（Special Dial）」を示すものです。ケースには使用に伴う細かな傷が見られますが、金張りの色調は良好に保たれ、ラグの輪郭やケース全体のプロポーションも明瞭です。裏蓋には浅い擦り傷が見られるものの、大きな打痕や変形はありません。ダイヤルの経年変化は最小限で、彫り文字や外周のミニッツ目盛りも鮮明に残っています。針とインデックスにも目立つ腐食はなく、当時の端正な輝きを楽しめる状態です。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

ムーブメントは、セイコー社製の23石手巻き機を搭載。毎時18,000振動のロービート設計に、当時開発されたばかりのダイヤショック耐震装置を備えています。受けには細かな筋目仕上げを施し、金色の刻字と赤いルビーを組み合わせた、実用機でありながら美観にも配慮した構成です。彫り文字盤、SDマーク、14K金張りのはまぐりケースという初期ロードマーベルを象徴する要素が揃った本品は、1960年に登場する初代グランドセイコーへと続く、国産高級時計の発展を伝える一本です。

Produced around 1959, this early Seiko Lord Marvel Ref.J14039 represents what was then the company’s highest-grade model. Introduced in 1958 and developed from the Marvel, the Lord Marvel pursued a notably high standard of accuracy, finishing, and casework before the arrival of Grand Seiko. This example features the rounded case commonly known in Japan as the “hamaguri” case, finished with an 80-micron layer of 14K gold fill. A slim bezel and straight lugs give the otherwise classical form a strong, clearly defined outline.

The silver-white dial carries the cursive “Seiko Lord Marvel” and “Diashock 23 Jewels” signatures as engraved lettering rather than conventional printing. Upright, multifaceted baton indexes and dauphine hands with sharply defined central ridges reflect the light with considerable depth. The star-shaped emblem above 6 o’clock identifies the higher-grade “SD,” or Special Dial, fitted with solid-gold applied markers. The case shows fine scratches from use, though the tone of the gold-filled finish remains well preserved and the outlines of the lugs and overall case proportions are clearly retained. The case back displays shallow surface marks but no significant dents or deformation. Aging to the dial is minimal, with the engraved lettering and outer minute track remaining crisp. The hands and indexes show no notable corrosion and retain their clean period appearance. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Inside is a 23-jewel, manually wound Seiko movement operating at a low-beat frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour. It is equipped with the Diashock shock-protection system, which had only recently been introduced at the time. The bridges are finished with fine linear graining, complemented by gold-tone lettering and red jewels—a practical construction with careful attention to appearance. With its engraved dial, SD emblem, and 14K gold-filled hamaguri case, this example brings together the defining details of the early Lord Marvel and reflects the development of Japanese high-grade watchmaking leading to the first Grand Seiko in 1960.
