COMMENT

A.O.P.A.（Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association）の要請により、飛行計算を腕上で完結させる計器として設計されたナビタイマー1stモデル。ロゴはプリント、それ以外の表記はギルトで仕上げられ、ブラックミラーの外周と黒のインダイヤルが精悍なコントラストを描きます。オールアラビアの夜光インデックス、ストレートのセンタークロノ秒針、そしてビーズを連ねたようなビーデッドベゼルはいずれも初期型を象徴する意匠です。

入水の影響を受けやすい構造ゆえ、良好な状態を保つ個体は限られます。本機は外周ベゼルおよびブラックミラー外周の5分から20分付近に自然な経年変化が見られますが、不自然な修正のないナチュラルな風合いです。ケースは保管に伴う小傷があるもののノンポリッシュで、ラグやベゼル周囲のエッジは明瞭。ビーデッドベゼルに目立つ損傷は確認できません。ムーブメントの状態も安定しております。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

1884年、スイスのサン・ティミエに創業した＜BREITLING＞は、クロノグラフ製作を軸に発展してきた名門。創業者レオン・ブライトリングは早くから航空分野の将来性を見据え、計器および腕時計の分野でその技術を応用しました。2代目ガストンの時代には腕時計型クロノグラフを確立し、“クロノグラフのスペシャリスト”としての地位を築きます。航空史と歩みを共にしてきた同社の系譜は、ナビタイマーという象徴的モデルに結実しています。

COMMENT

The first-generation Navitimer was conceived at the request of the A.O.P.A. (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) as a wrist-borne instrument capable of performing flight calculations. The logo is printed, while the remaining inscriptions are executed in gilt, creating a striking contrast against the black mirror outer track and black sub-dials. Fully luminous Arabic numerals, a straight center chronograph seconds hand, and the distinctive beaded bezel are all hallmarks of the early production models.

Given the construction, which is susceptible to moisture ingress, examples preserved in strong condition are limited. This piece shows natural aging between approximately 5 and 20 minutes on the outer bezel and black mirror track, yet the patina remains organic, without signs of artificial correction. The case is unpolished, bearing only minor storage marks, with well-defined edges along the lugs and bezel. The beaded bezel itself shows no notable damage. The movement remains stable. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Recognized as the origin of the aviation chronograph, the first Navitimer is powered by the celebrated Venus Cal. 178. Its column-wheel construction with carrying arm and screwed balance exemplifies the technical pinnacle of mid-century chronograph engineering. Combining instrument-grade functionality with the artisanal beauty of a gilt dial, this watch stands as an essential chapter in the Navitimer lineage.

Founded in 1884 in Saint-Imier, Breitling developed its reputation through chronograph manufacturing. Founder Léon Breitling foresaw the future of aviation and applied chronograph expertise to both onboard instruments and wristwatches. Under the leadership of Gaston Breitling, the wrist-worn chronograph was firmly established, cementing the brand’s position as a specialist in the field. The company’s close association with aviation history finds its most emblematic expression in the Navitimer.
