COMMENT

ROLEX Explorer Ref.5504は、1950年代後半に展開された初期エクスプローラーの中でも、特に希少性の高いリファレンスです。ダイヤルはブラックギルトのチャプターリング仕様で、ROLEXロゴとOYSTER PERPETUAL、チャプターリングは下地出し、EXPLORERとSUPER PRECISIONはプリントで表記されています。3・6・9のアラビアインデックス、12時位置の三角マーカー、メルセデスハンド、ロリポップセコンドを備え、6時位置はトリチウム表記以前の「SWISS」のみです。ブレスレットはリベットオイスターブレスレットを装備し、クラスプには1963年2期のスタンプが確認できます。

ケースは使用に伴う小傷が見られますが、ラグのラインはしっかりと残っており、全体として良好なプロポーションを保っています。ダイヤルには経年による粒状の変化が見られるものの、ブラックミラー特有の艶感は素晴らしく残っています。夜光はインデックス、針ともに深いクリームカラーへと変化し、1950年代のヴィンテージロレックスらしい雰囲気をよく伝えています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

COMMENT

The ROLEX Explorer Ref.5504 is one of the particularly rare references among the early Explorer models produced in the late 1950s. The dial is a black gilt chapter ring dial, with the ROLEX logo, OYSTER PERPETUAL text, and chapter ring executed in gilt relief, while EXPLORER and SUPER PRECISION are printed. It features the familiar 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, a triangular marker at 12 o’clock, Mercedes hands, and a lollipop seconds hand. At 6 o’clock, the dial is signed only “SWISS,” predating the later tritium markings. The watch is fitted with an Oyster rivet bracelet, with the clasp stamped for the second quarter of 1963.

The case shows minor scratches from use, but the lug lines remain well preserved, and the watch retains good overall proportions. The dial shows a granular texture from age, yet the glossy quality characteristic of a black mirror dial remains beautifully present. The luminous material on both the indexes and hands has aged to a deep cream tone, giving the watch the unmistakable atmosphere of a 1950s vintage Rolex. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The Ref.5504 Explorer is a special early Explorer variation with a background distinct from the later Ref.1016. Its SUPER PRECISION text rather than chronometer wording, the combination of gilt and printed dial details, and the “SWISS” signature specific to its 1958 production all contribute to its strong period character. Within its modest case size, the watch condenses the legibility and purposeful feel of the Explorer into a deeply appealing vintage Rolex.
