COMMENT

A.O.P.A.（Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association）の依頼を受け、飛行に必要な計算を瞬時に行えるよう、時計を新たな計器として作り上げています。ロゴマークはプリントのみで、それ以外はギルトの印字方法を用いて書かれています。インダイヤルがブラックなのは1stモデル独特のもので、2ndモデルでは白になります。オールアラビアの夜光インデックス、ストレートのセンター針、類を見ないビーズを並べたようなビーデットベゼルが1stの特徴です。

入水しやすい構造のため、ダメージが多い個体が一般的ですが、こちらはブラックミラーの艶感が、半艶のまま美しく残っています。NAVITIMERのプリントに一部欠けが見られます。針やインナーベゼルは当時の色味を残し、適度に色付いており、ヴィンテージテイストを楽しめます。インデックスのルミナスは黒く経年変化しています。ケースには保管傷がありますが、プロポーションに優れています。ビーデッドベゼルにダメージは見当たりません。このモデルの中では、状態は良い方だと言えます。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

1884年、スイスのサン・ティミエに複雑時計製作の工房が設立されたのが＜BREITLING＞のルーツ。創業者のレオン・ブライトリングはクロノグラフ製作の才能に富み、博覧会で数々の賞を受賞し、その名を世間に知らしめました。彼はエンジン飛行機が発展途上であった頃から航空産業の発展を確信し、飛行機のための時計や計器メーカーとして航空産業を支える意志を示しました。その意志を受け継いだ2代目ガストン・ブライトリングは、世界初の腕時計型クロノグラフを開発するなど、航空産業に多大な貢献をしています。“クロノグラフのスペシャリスト”として確固たる地位を築いた＜BREITLING＞は、今なお世界中で愛される名門ブランドとして発展し続けています。

COMMENT

The Navitimer is a pioneering aviation chronograph known the world over—this is its very first model. Developed at the request of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (A.O.P.A.), it was created as a functional tool capable of performing critical flight calculations at a glance. The A.O.P.A. logo is printed, while the rest of the dial details are rendered using gilt printing. Unique to this first model are the black sub-dials (which would later become white in the second generation), full Arabic luminous numerals, straight center hands, and a distinctive beaded bezel resembling a string of pearls.

Due to its construction, most examples show significant water damage over time. However, this piece retains the semi-gloss sheen of its black mirror dial beautifully. The hands and inner bezel maintain their original tone with a tasteful degree of aging, enhancing its vintage charm. The luminous numerals have aged to a deep brown. The case shows only minor storage marks, and its proportions remain well preserved. The beaded bezel is intact with no visible damage—making this one of the better-preserved examples of its kind. Fully disassembled and serviced by our watchmakers.

Inside is the legendary Venus Cal.178—a column-wheel chronograph movement with a carrying arm, built to high standards, and this example still features its original screwed balance (chiranéji). It has been overhauled in-house, with a confirmed power reserve of 45 hours. A rare opportunity to acquire an early Navitimer that fully embodies the unique aesthetics of the first generation.

Founded in 1884 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, Breitling began as a workshop dedicated to producing complicated timepieces. Its founder, Léon Breitling, was a gifted chronograph maker who earned accolades at numerous exhibitions, establishing the brand’s reputation. Long before the rise of aviation, Breitling envisioned timepieces as essential flight instruments and committed to supporting the growing aerospace industry. His son, Gaston Breitling, furthered this legacy by creating the world’s first wrist-worn chronograph. Known as the “chronograph specialist,” Breitling remains one of the most respected names in watchmaking today.
