COMMENT

ref.5508はガードレス（竜頭ガードの無い）の最後のサブマリーナーです。竜頭は60mmサイズで100m防水です。ダイアルはブラックミラーのギルトダイアル、ゴールドがかったレターやラインで風格を醸し出しています。100m＝300ftの表記のみシルバーのプリントレターです。エクスクラメーションダイアルと呼ばれる、ラジウムからトリチウムへ移行する最初期のダイアルで、6時位置の夜光にドットがあることが特徴です。ベゼルはサイドにコインエッジがありガードレス世代ならでは、後のref.5513とは異なる形状です。エクスパンジョンのリベットブレスを装備しています。

ダイアルの艶感は画像の通り失われています。しかしルミナスの状態が良いことで、この時計を活気のあるものにしています。パフィーでこんもりとしており、ベージュ焼けが見事です。針の劣化はリアリティーを感じさせるものです。ケースはボリューム感があり、太くて長いラグが現存しています。弱点ともいえるオリジナルの真鍮ベゼルの状態が比較的良いです。エッジがしっかりと残っており、大きなダメージがありません。

ガードレス、ゴールドギルト、サークルライン、エクスクラメーションドットなど、サブマリーナーが完成する前のスペックが満載です。この時計にしかないパティナが、旧サブの世界へといざないます。

エクスクラメーションダイアルは、ロレックスが文字盤（インデックスと針）の発光素材に使用されるラジウムの強度を低減したものに用いられた意匠です。放射線量が50年末から60年前にかけての原子力委員会による新しい規制に適合したことを示しています。これは通常、1960年代初頭のロレックスのダイヤルに表示されます。ref.5508はその過渡期の製品です。1950年代末製でありながら、このダイアルを搭載しているものが数多く市場にあります。あるいはその逆で1960年代初頭製でありながら、エクスクラミネーションダイアルでないものも多くあり、それらは混在しています。1950年代末製ストック品を新しい規格に合わせたダイアルで1960年初頭に販売したとする説、販売規制が厳しいところなど国によっては新しい規格で販売した説があります。

The Ref.5508 is the last Submariner without crown guards. The crown measures 60mm and provides 100m water resistance. The dial features a black mirror gilt dial, exuding elegance with gold-toned letters and lines. Only the 100m=300ft marking is printed in silver letters. It's equipped with an Exclamation dial, transitioning from radium to tritium, characterized by dots on the luminescent material at the 6 o'clock position. The bezel has coin edges on the side, unique to the crown guard-less generation and distinct from the later Ref.5513. It comes with an expansion rivet bracelet.

While the dial has lost some of its gloss, the excellent condition of the luminous material brings vibrancy to this timepiece. It's puffy and full, displaying a stunning beige patina. The aging of the hands adds a sense of authenticity. The case has a substantial presence with thick, long lugs. The original brass bezel, usually a weak point, is in relatively good condition, with well-preserved edges and minimal damage.

With features like the absence of crown guards, gold gilt, circle lines, and exclamation dots, it's packed with specifications from before the completion of the Submariner. The unique patina of this watch invites you to the world of vintage Submariners.

The Exclamation dial design was used by Rolex to reduce the strength of radium used in the luminous material on the dial (indexes and hands). It indicates compliance with new regulations by the Atomic Energy Commission from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. Ref.5508 represents a transitional product from that period. Although produced in the late 1950s, many examples are found with this dial. Conversely, some from the early 1960s lack the Exclamation dial, indicating a mix in the market. There are theories suggesting the sale of late 1950s stock with updated dials in the early 1960s to comply with new standards or due to strict sales regulations in certain countries.
