Since its debut in 1919, the Cartier Tank has remained an enduring icon. Among its rarest iterations is this Wood Tank, produced between 1975 and 1976. The case is crafted from Brazilian rosewood—a material now subject to CITES restrictions and prized even in the world of fine furniture. The dial is fashioned from the same wood, showcasing its natural grain as an integral design feature. Applied Roman numerals and Cartier’s logo complement the organic texture, while the cabochon crown adopts the bullet-shaped style seen only on earlier models.

Powering the watch is the hand-wound Cal.2512, a movement frequently used in Cartier’s classic timepieces. Uniquely, this model required specially made parts: because the dial is constructed from a layer of rosewood applied to a brass plate, its thickness necessitated custom taller wheels. This technical adaptation underscores the level of craftsmanship devoted to the Wood Tank.

The present example is in outstanding condition. Whereas most surviving Wood Tanks exhibit cracks or loss along the case sides, this one shows no signs of splitting or wear. The dial remains in mint condition, with applied indices whose polished surfaces capture the light beautifully. The strap is genuine crocodile leather, produced in the Tank’s original dimensions, and is paired with a Cartier-signed buckle. The watch has been fully serviced by our workshop.

Created at a time when Cartier was transitioning from jewelry to serious watchmaking, the Wood Tank is one of the most cult-admired “Old Tank” variants. Only about 3,000 were produced, sold exclusively through Cartier’s boutiques in London, Paris, and New York. Given the fragility of its material, few survive in such remarkable condition. For collectors seeking a truly distinctive Cartier, this piece represents a singular and highly desirable choice.
