ROLEX DATEJUST REF.1603 Wide Boy No Lum

COMMENT

COMMENT

The Ref.1603 stands out within the Rolex Datejust line as a sporty yet refined model featuring a stainless steel case and an engine-turned bezel. This example is distinguished by its rare “Wide Boy” dial, characterized by broad indexes and short, thick hands that enhance legibility and give the design a balanced visual weight. The absence of luminous material further refines the dial, lending it a clean and composed appearance. The silver sunray finish plays delicately with light, revealing subtle gradations and depth. It is fitted with a solid Jubilee bracelet Ref.62510H, end links 555, and clasp code A—all original period-correct components.

The case retains the robust construction typical of the Oyster line, with strong proportions and sharply defined lugs and bezel notches. The dial shows minimal aging, and the printing and indexes remain crisp. The hands and applied coronet preserve their original plating and luster. The bracelet exhibits almost no stretch and shows minimal wear, contributing to the piece’s exceptional overall balance. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The “Wide Boy” dial design emerged around the early 1970s, notable for its bold indexes and substantial presence compared with the slimmer styles of later decades. The non-luminous configuration was uncommon even at the time, highlighting the model’s understated elegance. Ref.1603 represents the ideal expression of restrained sport-elegance—an aesthetic that transitions effortlessly into modern style. Among vintage Rolex watches, it remains a model admired for both its design integrity and practical versatility.

The Datejust remains one of Rolex’s most enduring and universally admired models. Rolex was the first to introduce the instantaneous date-change mechanism—the “Datejust” function—at midnight. Launched in 1945, it is the oldest model in Rolex’s regular collection, offered in a wide variety of sizes and materials for men and women alike. Its timeless appeal lies in its versatility and enduring craftsmanship.
