OMEGA Constellation ref.168.005

COMMENT

The Constellation series, a stalwart supporting Omega over the years, boasts numerous variations. The standout feature of this model is its pie-pan dial, exhibiting a delicate yet bold design typical of the Constellation line. The dial's outer periphery is cut into 12 facets, creating a bold three-dimensional effect, and the shadows delicately move with the watch's orientation. The use of Arabic numerals at 12, 6, and 9, a rare design choice for this model, adds a touch of sportiness. The dauphine hands ensure easy readability. It comes equipped with the genuine Omega bracelet.

The Chronometer Cal.561 is a 5-position (five positions and temperature adjustment) movement with a calendar quickset (between 9 PM and 3 AM, moving the hands back and forth). It represents an improvement over the previous 500 series automatic movements and has received high praise. It's a practical and user-friendly timepiece suitable for everyday wear. We are confident in providing maintenance for this watch at our store, making it a recommended choice even for those new to antique watches.

The case exhibits only minor scratches from storage, preserving its original proportions well. The dial shows minimal aging, with no signs of past water entry, maintaining a beautiful texture. Despite some minimal aging, it does not betray its approximately 60 years of existence. The hands and indexes show no tarnishing on the upper surface, accentuating their three-dimensional appearance. It has been disassembled and cleaned at our store, confirming a power reserve of over 48 hours.

Omega during that era achieved remarkable results in competitions such as the Chronometer Contests, showcasing their precision. This legacy is incorporated into the design with features like the star at the 6 o'clock position and the Observatory-inspired medallion on the case back, symbolizing high precision.

The automatic efficiency of Omega's movements from this generation is commendable, often requiring little manual winding. The original crown of the Constellation, though it may feel somewhat heavy for manual winding, is a design choice and not a flaw.

The simple yet elegant and dignified design is highly appreciated.
