サンレイ仕上げが施されたダイヤルは、中心から放射状に繊細なヘアラインが広がる設計で、外周は面取りが入った4桁世代特有の造りとなっています。夜光塗料のない針とダイヤルにより視認性は損なわず、すっきりとした印象に仕上がっています。バーインデックスにはヘアラインと鏡面の仕上げが組み合わされており、光の角度によってさりげない輝きを見せます。ベゼルはエングレーブド仕様で、1601のフルーテッドベゼルと比較するとややカジュアルで若々しい印象を与えます。巻きのジュビリーブレスレット、68/4のクラスプ、55のエンドリンクが装着されています。

ムーブメントはクロノメーター仕様のCal.1570を搭載。1960年代半ばから長期間にわたり製造され、ロレックスの自社ムーブメントの中でも信頼性の高いキャリバーとして広く知られています。1970年代に入ってからはハック機能が追加されますが、本機はそれ以前の前期型です。

全体の状態は非常に良好で、ケースに目立つ摩耗は見られず、厚みやエッジも良好です。ダイヤルも経年変化がほとんど見られず、清潔感あるコンディションを維持しています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

The sunburst-finished dial features a finely brushed radial pattern emanating from the center, complemented by a beveled outer edge—an identifying trait of the four-digit Datejust generation. The absence of luminous material on both the dial and hands contributes to a clean, refined appearance without compromising legibility. Each bar index is finished with a combination of brushed and polished surfaces, offering subtle glints of light as the angle shifts. The engraved bezel presents a more casual, youthful aesthetic compared to the fluted bezel found on the Ref.1601. This example is fitted with a folded-link Jubilee bracelet, clasp dated 68/4, and correct end links stamped 55.

Inside beats the chronometer-certified Caliber 1570, a highly regarded in-house movement produced by Rolex from the mid-1960s onward. Known for its robustness and accuracy, it became a cornerstone of Rolex's mechanical lineup. This particular example is an earlier version, preceding the later addition of the hacking seconds feature introduced in the 1970s.

The overall condition is excellent, with no noticeable wear to the case. The lugs retain their original thickness and sharpness, and the dial remains clean and well-preserved with minimal aging. Fully disassembled and serviced by our workshop.

Ref. 1603 stands out as one of the most balanced executions of the Datejust—where functionality and refinement coexist seamlessly. The stepped dial, Jubilee bracelet, and engraved bezel reflect the distinctive aesthetic language established during this period, much of which would be echoed in later generations. More than fifty years since its introduction, the Ref. 1603 continues to be valued as a reliable, elegant choice—especially well-suited for professional settings.
