EXPLORER

Introduced in 1953, the EXPLORER is one of Rolex’s defining sports models, developed for use in demanding environments such as mountaineering and exploration. Its highly legible black dial with distinctive 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals established a visual identity that has remained central to the model ever since.

Vintage EXPLORER watches reveal numerous period-specific differences in dial printing, luminous material, indexes, and case construction. Originality is especially important, with the dial, hands, luminous material, and case all playing a major role in the character and value of each example. Its simple, functional design captures the strength and refinement of early Rolex sports watches.
