COMMENT

JUVENIA Arithmoは、腕時計に計算尺スケールを取り入れた世界初期のモデルとして知られる、非常に個性的なヴィンテージウォッチです。Arithmoは1930年代に登場したシリーズで、後年のBreitling Chronomatに先行する存在として語られます。本機は自動巻ではなく、より古い時代の手巻き仕様。ダイヤルは下地出しによるローマ数字と角型インデックスを組み合わせ、外周に細かな計算尺スケールを備えています。独自形状のプラスチック風防と回転ベゼルが重なり、実用計器としての雰囲気を色濃く残した一本です。

ケースは使用に伴う小傷や経年変化が見られますが、ラグの形状やケース全体のプロポーションはしっかりと保たれています。ダイヤルは自然なエイジングが進み、外周スケールや風防にも当時からの経年が感じられますが、数字や目盛りは視認できる状態です。ゴールドカラーの針とインデックスは落ち着いた色味に変化し、全体として古い計算尺ウォッチらしい良い雰囲気を備えています。裏蓋にはJUVENIAの刻印が入り、ムーブメントは手巻き式です。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

本機の大きな魅力は、時計でありながら計算機としての役割を備えた、Arithmo独自の構造にあります。回転ベゼルは赤い基準線が12時位置に重なると軽く止まる仕組みで、さらに回すと基準パーツをその位置に残したまま、計算尺スケールだけを回転させることができます。この機構は経年により軽いストップ感が失われている個体が少なくありませんが、本機ではその構造が残っており、Arithmoらしい操作感を楽しめます。時計史の中でも特殊な位置にある、コレクション性の高い一本です。

計算は、外周の回転スケールと内周の固定スケールを合わせて行います。掛け算では、外周の基準となる「10」を内周の最初の数字に合わせ、内周の次の数字の位置で外周の答えを読み取ります。割り算では、外周の割られる数を内周の割る数に合わせ、内周の「10」の位置で答えを読み取ります。現在の電子計算機とは異なりますが、当時の技術者や実務家が腕元で概算を行うための、実用性を備えた機構でした。

COMMENT

The JUVENIA Arithmo is a highly distinctive vintage watch, recognized as one of the earliest models in the world to incorporate a slide-rule scale into a wristwatch. Introduced as a series in the 1930s, the Arithmo is often noted as a predecessor to the later Breitling Chronomat. This particular example is fitted with a manually wound movement rather than the automatic movement found in later versions. The dial combines exposed-metal Roman numerals with rectangular indexes and a finely graduated slide-rule scale around its perimeter. Together with its distinctively shaped acrylic crystal and rotating bezel, these details give the watch the purposeful character of a period instrument.

The case shows minor scratches and signs of age, though the shape of the lugs and the overall proportions remain well preserved. The dial has developed natural aging, while the outer scale and crystal also display period wear; nevertheless, the numerals and graduations remain legible. The gold-tone hands and indexes have mellowed to a subdued hue, contributing to the appealing character of an early slide-rule watch. The caseback bears the JUVENIA signature, and the watch is powered by a manually wound movement. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

A defining feature of the Arithmo is its ability to function as both a wristwatch and a calculating instrument. When the red reference line reaches 12 o’clock, the rotating bezel is designed to come to a light stop. Turning it further allows the slide-rule scale to rotate while the reference marker remains in position. On many surviving examples, this subtle stopping action has been lost through age and wear; on this watch, however, the mechanism remains intact, preserving the distinctive operating feel of the Arithmo. Occupying an unusual place in watchmaking history, it is a highly collectible example.

Calculations are performed by aligning the rotating outer scale with the fixed inner scale. For multiplication, the outer “10,” which serves as the reference point, is aligned with the first number on the inner scale, and the result is read from the outer scale opposite the second number. For division, the dividend on the outer scale is aligned with the divisor on the inner scale, and the result is read at the inner “10.” Though unlike a modern electronic calculator, this was a practical mechanism that enabled engineers and other professionals of the period to make approximate calculations directly from the wrist.
