60年以上もの間作られたスペードマスターだからこそ、マイナーチェンジを繰り返した経緯があり、細かなディティールの変化を見つける楽しみがあります。それがロングセラーの理由のひとつ。それぞれの年代なりのスペックがあり、それが時計の楽しみ方とも言えます。

キャリバーはレマニア社製をベースとしたCal.861の後継機である1861を搭載しています。NASAの規定にはじめて合格したことでも有名な初代Cal.321は非常に完成度の高い機械としてその名を残しています。Cal.1861も含め、OMEGAが長年採用してきた３レジスター手巻き式クロノグラフが搭載されている点は、忘れてはいけないポイントです。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

The movement is powered by the Caliber 1861, which is a successor to the Caliber 861 based on the Lemania movement. The original Caliber 321, famous for being the first movement to pass NASA's stringent standards, is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship. It's important to note that Omega has consistently employed hand-wound chronograph movements with three registers, including the Caliber 1861.

While the association between "Speedmaster" and "space" is now instantly recognizable, it's crucial to remember that it was originally conceived as a pure motorsport watch with no connection to space. Additionally, the Speedmaster is credited with being the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on its outer bezel instead of the dial, a pioneering design element. Following its minor changes in 1959, such as transitioning to a black aluminum bezel and changing the hand shape from arrow to alpha, its visibility was significantly enhanced. NASA's quest for a durable chronograph capable of withstanding the rigors of space led to the Speedmaster's official adoption as the space watch, triumphing over formidable competitors. Its association with the first manned moon landing in 1969 remains a legendary tale.
