規則的な波模様の装飾を施したケースが印象的なドレスウォッチで、当時としては比較的大型のケースを採用しています。光を反射しないマットなダイヤルはシンプルに仕上げられており、繊細なケースデザインを際立たせる構成です。12時位置にはラピスラズリがインデックスとして配され、宝飾ブランドらしい意匠が感じられます。2針のドレスモデルながら、当時としては珍しい自動巻きムーブメントを搭載しており、EBEL社のCAL.2632を採用。ケースと同じ装飾を施した純正の18金無垢製バックルが付属しており、同時代のピアジェやオーデマ・ピゲと同様のクオリティが注ぎ込まれています。

使用感は極めて少なく、ケースはオリジナルのフォルムをしっかりと保持しています。ケースバックはシリアルナンバーおよびホールマークが明瞭に刻印されており、摩耗は見られません。ダイヤルは外周部に軽微な経年変化が確認されますが、全体としては良好なコンディションを保っています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

このモデルのデザインは、ロイヤルオークやノーチラスで知られる名デザイナー、ジェラルド・ジェンタによるものです。ラグジュアリースポーツブームの火付け役として知られる彼の黄金期の作品群の中、ジュエラーとしての格式を持つヴァンクリーフ＆アーペルの名のもと、あえてクラシカルかつ彫刻的なデザインを手掛けた点には驚かされます。審美性と実用性を兼ね備えた本モデルは、デザインの深さと品質の高さの両面から、今改めて評価されるべき一本です。

ヴァン クリーフ＆アーペルは1906年にパリ・ヴァンドーム広場で創業した、五大ジュエラーの一角を担う名門メゾンです。宝飾芸術における圧倒的な評価を背景に、同社が時計製造の世界に本格参入したのは、1930年代からです。とりわけ1960〜70年代には、ピアジェやカルティエと同様に、薄型の手巻きや自動巻きムーブメントを用いた金無垢ケースのドレスウォッチを多数手がけており、当時のスイスの高級機械式時計業界と密接に連携していたことがうかがえます。

COMMENT

This elegant dress watch features a striking case adorned with a rhythmic wave-like pattern, paired with a case size that was considered relatively large for its time. The matte dial, free from reflective elements, is kept intentionally simple to highlight the intricate case design. A lapis lazuli stone is set at the 12 o’clock position, adding a refined jeweled touch characteristic of a maison rooted in high jewelry. Despite being a classic two-hand dress model, it houses an automatic movement—an uncommon choice at the time—powered by EBEL’s Cal.2632. It also includes the original solid 18k gold buckle, crafted with the same decorative motif as the case, reflecting a level of quality on par with contemporary pieces from Piaget and Audemars Piguet.

Signs of use are minimal, and the case retains its original profile beautifully. The caseback shows clearly engraved serial numbers and hallmarks, with no notable wear. The dial exhibits only minor age-related changes around the perimeter, while overall it remains in excellent condition. Fully disassembled and cleaned by our workshop.

This model was designed by Gérald Genta, the legendary watch designer behind icons such as the Royal Oak and Nautilus. Created during the height of the 1970s luxury sports watch boom, it’s remarkable that Van Cleef & Arpels—a maison known for its haute joaillerie—chose to pursue a design that is sculptural, classical, and refined rather than sporty. This piece deserves renewed attention today, both for its thoughtful design and its uncompromising quality.

Van Cleef & Arpels, one of the five great maisons of haute joaillerie, was founded in 1906 on Place Vendôme in Paris. Though globally renowned for its artistry in fine jewelry, the brand began seriously exploring horology in the 1930s. Particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, Van Cleef & Arpels produced a range of exquisite solid gold dress watches equipped with thin manual or automatic movements, working closely with Switzerland’s high-end mechanical watchmakers—much like Piaget and Cartier of the same era.
