COMMENT

1978年から発表されたサントスシリーズ。角形のサントス、オクタゴン、ラウンドの3形状の展開から、代表的なコンビのサントスRef.2961です。ダイヤルはポーセリンカラー、当時のオリジナルです。カルティエのアイコニックなローマ数字とミニッツトラック、ブルースチールのバトン針が組み合わされています。自動巻ムーブメントであるCal.2671を搭載しています。

こちらのお品において最大の特徴はブレスレット。よく見かけるサントスはマイナスネジがブレスの駒に2個づつ配されたものですが、こちらはゴドロンブレスと呼ばれる自動巻モデル限定のものがついています。お探しの方はご存知かもしれませんが希少なものです。

ケースの状態はケースに流れるヘアラインがはっきり見えます。ガラスも含めて綺麗です。オリジナルのダイヤルはエイジングによるクラックや、シミが見られず当時の美しいままを保っています。気になる汚れやダメージが見られず、良いコンディションです。針にもくすみがなく気品の感じられる魅力を放っています。ブレスは傷もなく、各コマをつなぐように配された金の装飾がより深みを見せてくれます。

平面カットされたブレスレットは陽光でキラキラと輝き、良質なバングルを着けているようです。自動巻きのLMサイズのサントスは希少価値も高まり、探すのが簡単ではなくなってきました。そしてゴドロンブレスレット。気品と歴史を纏う一品です。

ビス留めのケースは飛行機のパーツを繋ぐネジがモチーフで、機体をイメージしてダイヤルなどの角がまるみを帯びたデザイン。現在ではジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初。アルベルト・サントス・デュモンという飛行家からの「飛行中に手を離さずに見ることができる時計がほしい。」という依頼が誕生のきっかけで、「サントス」の名を冠した腕時計が1911年に一般発売されました。

The Santos series, introduced in 1978, features a range of case shapes: square, octagonal, and round. Among them, the iconic two-tone Santos Ref. 2961 stands out. This particular model boasts a porcelain-colored dial, remaining true to its original design from the time. The signature Cartier Roman numerals, along with the minute track and blued steel baton hands, complement the classic aesthetic. It is powered by the automatic Caliber 2671 movement.

What makes this watch particularly special is its bracelet. While the standard Santos models feature bracelets with two screws per link, this piece is equipped with the rare "Godron" bracelet, typically exclusive to the automatic octagonal models. Those familiar with this style will know just how hard it is to find.

The case remains in excellent condition, with clear hairline finishes visible across its surface. The crystal is also pristine. The original dial shows no signs of aging, cracks, or spots, retaining its flawless, period-correct appearance. The hands remain bright, free from tarnishing, and exude a sense of refined elegance. The bracelet is in impeccable condition, with no visible scratches, and the gold accents interspersed between the links add a touch of depth and luxury.

The flat-cut bracelet shimmers beautifully in sunlight, resembling a high-quality bangle. The screw-set case design, inspired by the screws used in airplane construction, reflects Cartier’s pioneering approach to wristwatch design. In 1904, Cartier became the first to craft a wristwatch, responding to aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont’s request for a timepiece he could view without needing to remove his hands from the controls mid-flight. The result, the "Santos," was released to the public in 1911, and has since become one of Cartier’s most enduring and iconic designs.
