オメガのレジェンド、スピードマスターRef.2998。リューズガードが無く、ストレートラグが際立つ無骨なケースデザインが特徴です。4mmプッシュボタンが絶妙なバランスで、初期スピードマスターの存在感を高めています。ヴィンテージスピードマスターならではのシルバーカラーのアルファハンドが、このモデルに一層の趣を添えています。日本ではキャタピラーと呼ばれるフラットリンクブレスレットは、Ref.7912、エンドリンク6、クラスプデイト63/2とともに装備されています。搭載ムーブメントはCal.321で、ピラーホイール式を採用しているため製造コストが高く、チラネジテンプと巻き上げヒゲを備えた高級仕様です。

ベゼルには写真で確認できる通り、程よい使用傷とカラーフェードがヴィンテージらしい雰囲気を醸し出しています。ケースは大きな打痕などなく、プロポーションが非常に良好です。ダイヤルは理想的な状態です。ほぼ無傷で、良い状態を維持しています。夜光塗料は経年により一部変色し、さらに独特のヴィンテージ感を引き立てています。付属のキャタピラーブレスレットはエラスティックファンクションが正常に機能しています。弊社にて分解掃除済みで、すべてが正常に作動します。

このスピードマスターは、NASAが月に持ち込んだモデルよりもさらに前の世代にあたります。ブレスレットまでオリジナルを揃えるのは非常に困難であり、2998の枝番によってデザインが細かく異なる中、オリジナリティを保った非常に貴重な一本です。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

The Omega Speedmaster Ref. 2998 is a true legend in the world of horology. Known for its rugged case design with straight lugs and the absence of crown guards, this model embodies the essence of early Speedmasters. The 4mm pushers are perfectly balanced, enhancing the overall presence of this iconic timepiece. The silver-colored Alpha hands, a hallmark of vintage Speedmasters, further add to its charm. It comes equipped with the flat-link bracelet, known as the "Caterpillar" in Japan, featuring Ref. 7912, end links numbered 6, and a clasp dated 63/2. Inside, the watch is powered by the revered Caliber 321, a column-wheel movement with high-end features such as a screw balance and Breguet overcoil, reflecting the higher manufacturing costs of the time.

As seen in the photos, the bezel exhibits signs of wear and slight color fading, which enhances the watch’s vintage appeal. The case remains in excellent shape with no significant dings or scratches, preserving its proportions beautifully. The dial is in near-perfect condition, showing minimal signs of aging. The luminous material on the hands and indices has developed a patina over time, further accentuating the unique vintage aesthetic. The attached "Caterpillar" bracelet retains its elastic function and operates smoothly. The watch has been fully serviced by our team and functions flawlessly.

This Speedmaster belongs to a generation even prior to the models taken to the Moon by NASA. Assembling an original set, including the bracelet, is quite challenging, and given the subtle design differences among the 2998's sub-references, this piece is remarkably valuable for preserving its originality.

Today, the association of the Speedmaster with space is instantly recognisable, but it was originally conceived purely as a motorsport watch, entirely unrelated to space. Moreover, the Speedmaster is said to be the world's first watch to display the tachymeter on the outer bezel rather than the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor change: the bezel transitioned to a black aluminium base, and the hands changed from arrow to alpha shape, improving visibility. NASA was seeking a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of space, and the Speedmaster was selected as the official watch after outperforming formidable competitors. It is famously known that the Speedmaster was worn during humanity's first landing on the Moon in 1969.
