ユニバーサル・ジュネーブを代表する傑作、ポールルーター。すり鉢状のインナーリングに5分刻みのインデックスを配し、ダイヤル中央には艶やかなブラックギルトを備えた、奥行きのある構成です。クロスラインと控えめなドット状のミニッツマーカーは均整が取れており、クラシカルでありながら洗練されたバランスを実現しています。ドーフィンハンドはしなやかにダイヤルを駆け、視認性を確保するとともにデザイン全体の完成度を高めています。ケースはゴールドフィルド仕上げのラウンド型で、フラットベゼル、特徴的なねじれラグを持ち、ジェラルド・ジェンタがまだ無名の時代に手掛けた作品として知られる点も、このモデルに特別な価値を与えています。

搭載するのはユニバーサル・ジュネーブの代名詞ともいえる「MICROTOR」自動巻機構Cal.215-1です。通常の自動巻ローターとは異なり、小型のマイクロローターをムーブメント内に埋め込むことで薄型化を実現しつつ、スクリューバックの堅牢な構造を両立させています。この革新的な構造は後年の多くのブランドにも影響を与え、当時のユニバーサルの先進性を象徴しています。ムーブメントの仕上げも丁寧で、精度・耐久性の双方において優れた評価を得ています。

コンディションは良好で、ケースは半世紀以上を経てもエッジが立ち、オリジナルの立体感を保っています。オリジナルのプラスチック風防がついています。ダイヤルは艶やかさが残り、ブラックミラー特有の深みが宿っています。インナーリングは劣化の兆しがなく、ゴールドのトーンは均一です。針は自然なエイジングを伴いながらも、視認性と美観を損なっていません。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

ポールルーターは、1954年にSAS（スカンジナビア航空）が北極航路の開拓を記念して、耐磁性を備えたパイロットウォッチの製作をユニバーサルに依頼したことから誕生しました。その名は、北極を経由して大西洋と太平洋を結ぶ2600kmの飛行ルートに由来します。当時の航空黎明期を象徴するツールウォッチでありながら、優美なデザインと革新技術を備えた稀有な存在です。ジェンタデザインの原点を体現し、国際航空史と時計史の双方に深く結びつくこのモデルは、コレクターにとって特別な価値を持ち続けています。

ユニバーサル・ジュネーブの歴史は二人の時計師、エミーユ・デコームとジョルジュ・ペレによって1894年スイスで創業されたところから始まる。高級感溢れるデザインウォッチや複雑時計の製造を得意とし、クロノグラフの名品＜コンパックス＞を開発したことで、その名を時計史に刻んだ名門のブランド。

COMMENT

The Universal Genève Polerouter stands as one of the brand’s defining masterpieces. Its dial features a recessed inner ring with five-minute markers, while the center is finished in a lustrous black gilt, creating a sense of depth and contrast. A crosshair and subtle dot minute markers add harmony and balance, giving the watch a classical yet refined appearance. The dauphine hands sweep gracefully across the dial, ensuring both legibility and a cohesive design. The round gold-filled case, with its flat bezel and distinctive twisted lugs, further enhances its character. Notably, this model is celebrated as an early work of Gérald Genta, created during his little-known years, lending it an additional layer of significance.

Powering the watch is Universal Genève’s hallmark “MICROTOR” automatic movement, Cal. 215-1. Unlike conventional automatic rotors, its compact micro-rotor is embedded within the movement, allowing for a thinner profile while maintaining the strength of a screw-back case. This pioneering construction later influenced numerous brands and stands as a testament to Universal’s forward-thinking engineering. The movement is finely finished, praised for both precision and durability.

The condition of this example is excellent. Even after more than half a century, the case retains sharp edges and its original three-dimensional form. It still carries its original acrylic crystal. The dial remains glossy, with the depth and richness characteristic of black mirror gilt preserved. The inner ring shows no signs of deterioration, and its gold tone remains even. The hands have aged naturally but maintain both legibility and visual harmony. The indexes remain clean, their facets catching the light with brilliance. The Polerouter was born in 1954, when SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) commissioned Universal Genève to create an antimagnetic pilot’s watch to commemorate the opening of its pioneering polar route. Its name derives from the 2,600 km transpolar flight path that connected the Atlantic and Pacific via the North Pole. As a pilot’s tool, it embodied the spirit of early aviation, yet its elegant design and technical innovation make it a rare blend of function and artistry. The history of Universal Genève began in 1894 when watchmakers Émile Decroix and Georges Perret founded the company in Switzerland.
