IWC Roman Dial Ref.803A

COMMENT

COMMENT

This elegant vintage IWC features a classic round case accented by slender straight lugs that emphasize its refined contours. The dial showcases cleanly arranged Roman numeral indexes—an uncommon and highly sought-after design. With its domed bombe-style profile and subtle horizontal brushing, the dial offers a more subdued reflection than typical sunburst finishes, creating a calm, sophisticated appearance. Despite its snap-back case construction, the watch is equipped with water resistance and fitted with a rare “fish” crown—a hallmark of IWC’s vintage models.

Inside, the watch houses the Cal. 8541B, powered by IWC’s in-house Pellaton winding system. This unique mechanism enables bi-directional winding via a pawl-based system, known for its efficiency and durability. The 8541B is notable as the last automatic movement developed entirely in-house by IWC, and features both a hacking function and quickset date—hallmarks of excellent practicality. It’s a prime example of mechanical elegance and engineering mastery.

Over time, the dial has aged into a soft champagne tone, with a consistent patina that enhances its vintage character. The black-printed hands and indexes remain glossy and free of deterioration, ensuring both legibility and visual appeal. The case retains its sharp lines, and the lugs show well-preserved bevels, all contributing to an overall fine condition. The watch has been disassembled and cleaned by our team.

The combination of the aged champagne dial and bold Roman numerals gives this piece a dignified vintage presence. Its understated yet rich tones, paired with classical elements, evoke a charm that only time can bestow. This watch exemplifies the quiet refinement of vintage IWC—perfect for collectors or those seeking to add a touch of elegance to everyday wear.

IWC’s Cal. 85 series movements utilize the distinctive Pellaton winding system, which produces a notable, bead-like sound during winding. This audible presence is often more pronounced than in other automatic calibers—a subtle yet unique trait appreciated by enthusiasts.
