CARTIER SM PRE MUST TANK

BRAND

COMMENT

Since its creation in 1919, Cartier’s iconic Tank has been produced across generations, embodying timeless elegance. This example is a so-called “Pre-Must Tank,” made before the launch of the Must line in the 1970s. It features a gold-filled case and a white Roman dial without the “must de” signature, displaying a refined design language later echoed in the Louis Cartier Collection.

The case remains in very good condition, with sharp lug edges well preserved and minimal signs of wear. The dial shows fine surface relief from age, lending it a vintage character, while the hands remain free from damage and retain their brilliance. The black-printed indexes are fully intact and clearly legible. Serviced and disassembled by our watchmaker.

Watches produced before the introduction of the Must Tank in 1977 are often referred to by collectors as “Pre-Must.” Emerging during Cartier’s early efforts to expand wristwatch production in the early 1970s, these pieces are now regarded as mysterious and fascinating creations from the brand’s formative years. Combining vintage charm with Cartier’s signature elegance, this watch represents a true connoisseur’s choice among the cult-favorite Pre-Must Tanks.

BRAND

Today Cartier is renowned as one of the world’s foremost jewelers, but as early as 1904—when pocket watches still dominated—it was Cartier who pioneered the modern wristwatch. The name “Tank” is derived from its design inspiration: the Renault tanks that played a role in bringing the First World War to a close. Within this heritage, the Must line has become especially well-known for its rich variety of dials.
