IWC Bark Tank Onyx Dial Ref.4179 w.18K IWC Buckle

COMMENT

COMMENT

IWC Ref.4179 features a square case in solid 18K yellow gold, fully finished in a bark texture, paired with a glossy onyx dial. The finely engraved surface creates rich light and shadow across the case, heightening the contrast with the flat black dial. The minimalist layout omits hour markers entirely, leaving only sharply defined dauphine hands to emphasize the purity of material. Rather than mirror-polished, the hands are rendered in a delicate brushed finish, quietly echoing the bark-textured case. Even the crown, set with a black cabochon, adheres to a unified aesthetic.

The bark-finished case retains strong dimensional definition, with minimal softening to the engraved texture. The gold tone remains deep and balanced. The onyx dial is free from cracks or chips, maintaining its immersive, glass-like sheen. The hands remain in excellent condition, offering crisp contrast against the black surface. The caseback engravings remain legible, and the movement operates steadily. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Powered by Cal. 412, a manually wound movement long respected for IWC’s robust engineering, this example is further distinguished by its period-correct IWC solid 18K gold buckle—an uncommon feature seldom encountered. In an era when many buckles were gold-plated or capped, a solid gold example was reserved for higher-end dress models. With its bark-textured case, flawless onyx dial, and solid gold buckle all intact, this piece stands apart within its generation—exceptional in design, material integrity, and completeness.
