BREITLING Chronomat Ref.808です。1942年に誕生した、回転計算尺を備えるクロノグラフ「クロノマット」の流れを受け継ぐセカンドモデルです。ホワイトダイヤルにブラックとレッドのスケールを組み合わせた精密感のあるデザインで、テレメーター、ミニッツ表示、計算尺が外周に密に配されています。アプライド仕様のBロゴとインデックスが立体感を生み、クロノグラフ針を赤、時分針とスモールセコンド針をシルバーで統一した配色が、視認性と機能美を高めています。丸型プッシュボタンを備えたRef.808ならではのクラシックなケースバランスも魅力です。ムーブメントは手巻きクロノグラフCal.Venus 175を搭載しています。

ダイヤルは極めて良好なコンディションを保っており、経年による焼けや大きなダメージはほとんど見られません。外周の細かなプリント、赤いスケール、BREITLING GENEVEロゴ、CHRONOMAT表記はいずれも明瞭で、ヴィンテージクロノグラフとして非常に良い状態です。ケースはミントコンディションといえる美しさで、三面ラグのエッジもシャープに残っています。回転ベゼルは均一な色調を保ち、リューズやプッシュボタンにも目立つ摩耗は見られません。針とインデックスの経年感も最小限に抑えられており、全体として丁寧に扱われてきたことがうかがえます。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

クロノマットの計算尺は、掛け算や割り算を素早く行うための実用的な機構で、赤い「H」マークや円周率を示す「π」表記など、当時の道具時計としての機能性が随所に表れています。Cal.Venus 175は、ピラーホイールとキャリングアームを備えたクラシッククロノグラフの名機で、操作感と機械としての見応えを兼ね備えています。ナビタイマーとは異なるコンパクトなサイズ感は腕なじみに優れ、複雑なスケールを持ちながらも装着時にはすっきりと収まります。ダイヤル、ケース、ベゼル、ムーブメントの状態が高い水準で揃った、ヴィンテージブライトリングを代表する魅力的な一本です。

航空時計とは言え、軍に官給された事はなく、主にアメリカの民間パイロットが使用していた。当時は庶民には手の届かない高級品であったことでしょう。“クロノグラフのスペシャリスト”として確固たる地位を築いた＜BREITLING＞は、今なお世界中で愛されている名門ブランドとして発展し続けています。

COMMENT

This is the BREITLING Chronomat Ref.808, the second-generation model that follows the lineage of the Chronomat, a chronograph with a rotating slide-rule bezel first introduced in 1942. The white dial is combined with black and red scales, creating a highly technical appearance, with the telemeter scale, minute track, and slide-rule markings densely arranged around the outer edge. The applied “B” logo and indexes add depth to the dial, while the red chronograph hands, silver hour and minute hands, and silver small seconds hand create a clear and functional color scheme. The round pushers also give the Ref.808 its classical case balance. It is powered by the hand-wound Venus 175 chronograph movement.

The dial remains in outstanding condition, with almost no visible discoloration or significant damage from age. The fine outer printing, red scales, BREITLING GENEVE logo, and CHRONOMAT text are all clear, making this an excellent example as a vintage chronograph. The case can be described as mint, with the sharp edges of the three-faceted lugs beautifully preserved. The rotating bezel retains an even tone, and there is no noticeable wear to the crown or pushers. The hands and indexes show only minimal aging, suggesting that the watch has been carefully handled over the years. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The slide rule of the Chronomat was a practical mechanism designed for quick multiplication and division, with details such as the red “H” mark and “π” indication showing its character as a functional tool watch of the period. The Venus 175 is a classic chronograph movement equipped with a column wheel and carrying arm, offering both pleasing operation and strong mechanical appeal. Unlike the Navitimer, its more compact case size sits comfortably on the wrist, allowing the complex scales to be enjoyed without the watch feeling overly large when worn. With its dial, case, bezel, and movement all preserved to a high standard, this is an outstanding example representing the appeal of vintage Breitling.

BRAND

Though classified as an aviation watch, it was never officially issued to the military and was primarily used by American civilian pilots. At the time, it was considered a luxury instrument beyond the reach of the general public.
