OMEGA Seamaster Ref.176.004は、通称“Big Blue”として知られる1970年代のダイバーズクロノグラフです。大型のステンレススチールケースに120m/400ft防水表記、ブルーの回転ベゼル、ブルーサンレイダイヤルを組み合わせた、当時のオメガらしい大胆なプロフェッショナルモデルです。搭載ムーブメントは、オメガ初の自動巻クロノグラフCal.1040。中央にはクロノグラフ秒針とオレンジの積算分針、9時位置に24時間表示、6時位置に12時間積算計、3時位置にデイトを備えています。視認性を重視した大型インデックス、太いホワイトハンド、オレンジのアクセントが、1970年代の機能美を強く感じさせます。

本個体の大きな魅力は、ダイヤル、針、ベゼル、ケース、ブレスレットを含め、製造当時のオリジナル構成を良好に保っている点です。Ref.176.004はブルーのダイヤルやベゼルに経年変化が出やすく、修理の過程でオメガ純正サービスパーツへ交換された個体がほとんどです。その中で、本個体はオリジナルのブルーダイヤルと第二世代ベゼルを備えた、コレクション性の高い一本です。ケースは使用に伴う小傷が見られますが、Big Blueらしい重厚なプロポーションがしっかりと保たれています。ダイヤルは深いブルーの縦ヘアライン仕上げが美しく、光の角度によってネイビーから鮮やかなブルーに近い色味まで変化します。インデックスの夜光は崩れがなく、トリチウムならではのベージュ焼けしたベゼルインサート、褪せたオレンジの60分積算計が素晴らしいヴィンテージテイストです。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

オメガ純正メッシュブレスレットが装着されており、大型ケースとの相性も良好です。フィリップスでも、Ref.176.004はフライトマスターやシーマスター1000、プロプロフといった1970年代オメガのプロフェッショナルモデルの流れを汲む存在として紹介されており、その独創的なケースデザインと本格的なダイバーズクロノグラフとしての完成度が高く評価されています。当時は高価なプロフェッショナルツールとして実際に使用された個体が多く、オリジナルコンディションで残るものは決して多くありません。ブルーダイヤルやベゼルがオリジナルのまま残る個体は特に希少であり、オールオリジナルの構成を維持した本個体は、Ref.176.004の魅力を色濃く伝えるコレクターズピースと言えるでしょう。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

The OMEGA Seamaster Ref.176.004, commonly known as the “Big Blue,” is a 1970s diver’s chronograph with a bold professional character. It features a large stainless steel case, 120m/400ft water-resistance marking, a blue rotating bezel, and a blue sunburst dial, giving the watch the strong design presence associated with Omega of this period. It is powered by the Cal.1040, Omega’s first automatic chronograph movement. The dial is arranged with central chronograph seconds and an orange central minute recorder, a 24-hour display at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour recorder at 6 o’clock, and a date display at 3 o’clock. Large indexes, bold white hands, and orange accents give the watch excellent legibility and a strong sense of 1970s functional design.

The great appeal of this example lies in the fact that it remains in well-preserved original configuration, including the dial, hands, bezel, case, and bracelet. The Ref.176.004 is a model in which the blue dial and bezel are especially prone to age-related change, and many examples were fitted with genuine Omega service parts during later maintenance. Within that context, this watch is a highly collectible example retaining its original blue dial and second-generation bezel. The case shows minor scratches from use, but the substantial proportions associated with the Big Blue remain clearly intact. The dial has a beautiful deep blue vertical brushed finish, shifting from navy to a more vivid blue depending on the angle of the light. The lume on the indexes remains stable and has aged to a beige tone characteristic of tritium, while the bezel insert and faded orange 60-minute recorder add excellent vintage character. The watch is fitted with an original Omega mesh bracelet, which pairs very well with the large case. Phillips has also presented the Ref.176.004 as part of the lineage of Omega’s 1970s professional models, alongside the Flightmaster, Seamaster 1000, and Ploprof, recognizing its original case design and its high level of completeness as a true diver’s chronograph. Many examples were used as expensive professional tools at the time, and watches that remain in original condition are far from common today. Examples retaining their original blue dial and bezel are especially rare, and this all-original example can be regarded as a collector’s piece that strongly conveys the appeal of the Ref.176.004.

Today, the Speedmaster is immediately associated with space exploration, but it was originally created purely as a motorsport watch, with no connection to space at the time. The Speedmaster is also said to have been the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the outer bezel rather than on the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor update: the bezel was changed to a black aluminum insert, and the hands were changed from broad arrow hands to alpha hands, improving legibility. NASA later began searching for a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of space, and the Speedmaster prevailed over several major competitors to become its official watch. It is famously known as the watch worn during mankind’s first Moon landing in 1969.
