OMEGA Seamaster Ref.176.004は、通称“Big Blue”として知られる1970年代のダイバーズクロノグラフです。大型のステンレススチールケースに120m/400ft防水表記、ブルーの縦ヘアラインダイヤル、ブルーの回転ベゼルを組み合わせた、当時のオメガらしい大胆な設計が特徴です。搭載ムーブメントは、オメガ初の自動巻クロノグラフCal.1040。中央にはクロノグラフ秒針とオレンジの積算分針、9時位置に24時間表示、6時位置に12時間積算計、3時位置にデイトを備えています。視認性を重視した大型インデックスと太いホワイトハンド、オレンジのアクセントが、プロフェッショナルモデルらしい機能美を強く印象づけます。

ケースは使用に伴う小傷が見られますが、重厚なプロポーションはしっかりと保たれています。ケース上面のヘアライン、ケースサイドの面構成、ベゼル外周の力強い造形が良好に残っており、Big Blueらしい存在感が際立つコンディションです。ダイヤルはブルーの発色が美しく、サンレイ仕上げによる濃淡の変化も良好です。インデックスや針の夜光は大きな崩れがなく、白いプリントやオレンジの中央積算分針も鮮やかに残っています。ベゼルはオメガで交換されたサービスパーツで、数字と目盛りのプリントが明瞭です。未開封のオメガ純正サービスメッシュブレスレットと赤いオメガケースが付属します。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

この時代はカラーダイヤルが本格的に展開され始めた時期であり、ブルーのダイヤル塗装や外装パーツに経年変化が出やすく、オメガに修理が持ち込まれ、サービスパーツへ交換された個体が多いです。そのためRef.176.004において、すべてを製造当初のまま保った個体は非常に限られます。本個体はベゼルとブレスレットがサービスパーツとなりますが、Big Blueというモデルの性質を踏まえると自然な履歴といえ、良好なダイヤルコンディションと純正サービスパーツの組み合わせにより、鑑賞性と実用性を兼ね備えた一本に仕上がっています。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

COMMENT

The OMEGA Seamaster Ref.176.004, commonly known as the “Big Blue,” is a 1970s diver’s chronograph with a strong professional character. It features a large stainless steel case, 120m/400ft water-resistance marking, a blue sunburst dial, and a blue rotating bezel, giving the watch the bold design approach associated with Omega of this period. It is powered by the Cal.1040, Omega’s first automatic chronograph movement. The dial is arranged with central chronograph seconds and an orange central minute recorder, a 24-hour display at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour recorder at 6 o’clock, and a date display at 3 o’clock. Large indexes, bold white hands, and orange accents give the watch excellent legibility and a strong functional presence suited to a professional model.

The case shows minor scratches from use, but retains its substantial proportions very well. The brushing on the upper case, the faceted case sides, and the powerful form of the outer bezel remain well preserved, giving the watch the strong presence expected of the Big Blue. The dial retains a beautiful blue tone, with the sunburst finish showing attractive depth and variation under the light. The luminous material on the indexes and hands remains stable, while the white printing and orange central minute recorder are still vivid. The bezel is a service part replaced by Omega, with the numerals and scale clearly printed. The watch comes with an unopened original Omega service mesh bracelet and a red Omega case. This period marked the broader use of colored dials, and blue dial paint and exterior components were often prone to age-related change. Many examples were sent to Omega for service and had parts replaced over time, making fully original Ref.176.004 examples very limited today. While this watch has a service bezel and service bracelet, this is a natural part of the model’s history when considered in the context of the Big Blue. With its well-preserved dial and genuine Omega service parts, this example offers both strong visual appeal and practical usability.

BRAND

Today, the Speedmaster is immediately associated with space exploration, but it was originally created purely as a motorsport watch, with no connection to space at the time. The Speedmaster is also said to have been the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the outer bezel rather than on the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor update: the bezel was changed to a black aluminum insert, and the hands were changed from broad arrow hands to alpha hands, improving legibility. NASA later began searching for a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of space, and the Speedmaster prevailed over several major competitors to become its official watch. It is famously known as the watch worn during mankind’s first Moon landing in 1969.
