SEIKO WORLD TIME REF.6117-6010

COMMENT

Produced around 1968, this Seiko World Time Ref.6117-6010 is a successor to Japan’s first world-time wristwatch, introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It is generally referred to in the vintage market as the “second model.” While the original version marked the end of its 24-hour scale with “24,” this iteration uses “0.” The city ring also adds “SINGAPORE,” reflecting the country’s independence from Malaysia in 1965. The names encircling the dial lend the watch the character of a compact map of the world.

Alongside the conventional hour and minute hands is an arrow-shaped hand that completes one revolution every 24 hours. The rotating inner bezel is printed with cities from around the world. By aligning the current city with the time indicated by the 24-hour hand, the approximate time in each location can be read. The inner bezel does not rotate automatically with the time and must be positioned manually using the crown whenever required. Unlike a GMT watch displaying two time zones, this arrangement provides an overview of the time across multiple cities.

The case shows fine scratches from use, though the outlines of the lugs and the faceted case sides remain well preserved. The grey dial displays moderate aging, while its finely woven texture and printed details remain clearly defined. The rotating city ring retains vivid black, blue, and red printing. The hands and applied indexes are also in good condition, and the red 24-hour hand retains its attractive color. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Inside is the 17-jewel automatic Cal.6117A. The crown operates the inner bezel in its normal position, adjusts the date at the first position, and sets the time at the second. Without a manual-winding function, the movement is powered solely by its automatic rotor—a straightforward and practical construction typical of Seiko from this period. Its distinctly modern appearance carries a clear association with international travel, while details such as the addition of “SINGAPORE” and the “0” marking identify it as the second-generation model.
