OMEGA Ref.2639 Pentagon Luminous

COMMENT

COMMENT

A hand-wound Omega featuring a striking black gilt dial, this timepiece is powered by the legendary 30mm caliber—an essential movement in Omega’s history, renowned for its exceptional design and reliability. Derived from the early 30 series, the movement evolved into the small-seconds 26 series and the center-seconds 28 series, both characterized by robust construction and a gear train reminiscent of pocket watches. The 30mm designation, unusually large for its time, signified its impressive proportions. This particular piece, dating back to 1951, boasts a 36mm case, a size that imparts a notable presence. The screw-back construction enhances durability, while the small-seconds configuration keeps the case profile slim, ensuring a comfortable fit. The 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock markers feature pentagon-shaped luminous plots, enhancing both legibility and aesthetic appeal.

The case exhibits minor signs of wear, yet remains free from any significant damage, retaining a distinguished vintage character. The dial has aged gracefully, with little to no discoloration and only minor surface marks visible upon close inspection. The hands are well-preserved, catching the light with an elegant shimmer. The faceted, two-sided indices show no signs of aging, maintaining their sharp contrast and depth. The luminous material on the hands and around the indices has developed a refined beige hue, harmonizing beautifully with the overall look of the watch.

Even by modern standards, the 36mm case size is ideal, seamlessly complementing a tailored suit while offering the presence of a pocket watch-inspired movement on the wrist. The steady, low-frequency 5-beat-per-second cadence lends a quiet confidence to its wearer, making this timepiece as much about experience as it is about function. A true connoisseur’s piece, this Omega encapsulates the enduring beauty of fine watchmaking.
