OMEGA 1938 38mm Mint Ref.CK859 AF

COMMENT

COMMENT

The mere fact that this watch boasts a 38mm case diameter in this era speaks to its exceptional status. The silver dial features an intricate vertical brushing, complemented by an outer chapter ring with Arabic numerals. The hour markers are elegantly arranged, while the hands, an unusually slender type for the 1930s, add to the refined aesthetic. The center seconds hand extends all the way to the chapter ring, enhancing legibility. The buckle is a period-correct Staybrite piece, officially adopted by Omega at the time when the brand did not produce its own buckles.

Powering this timepiece is the Cal. 23.4SC, a movement featuring a bimetallic balance wheel with temperature compensation. Developed during an era when wristwatches were gaining widespread popularity, this caliber represents Omega’s dedication to precision and innovation. Its superior serviceability ensures that it remains a highly regarded movement, even by modern standards.

The case remains in outstanding condition, showing no signs of modification. The sharp edges of the lugs and the finely preserved hairline finishing on the mid-case highlight its pristine state. The dial maintains its original texture and coloration, while the blued steel hands exhibit minimal fading, retaining their deep blue hue. This watch has undergone a full disassembly and cleaning at our workshop, ensuring it is ready for continued use.

This piece stands out as a particularly fascinating example of late 1930s watchmaking. While its design reflects the Art Deco era, its most remarkable feature remains its unprecedented case size. At a time when most men’s watches measured around 30mm, a 38mm case was an extraordinary distinction. As a pre-war artifact, this timepiece offers a rare opportunity to experience history in its original form.
