ROLEX SUBMARINER Ref.1680 “RED SUB” MK5 DIAL
COMMENT
1973年製、ロレックス サブマリーナー Ref.1680、通称「赤サブ」です。サブマリーナーで初めてデイト表示を採用したモデルで、本個体は防水表記が「660ft＝200m」となる“Feet First”のMK5ダイヤルを装備しています。MK5は一般に1972年から1973年頃に見られ、「SUBMARINER」の赤文字を白い下地を介さず、ブラックダイヤルへ直接印刷している点が特徴です。比較的閉じた形状の「660」、丸みを帯びた「ft」の書体、各文字列の位置関係にもMK5固有の特徴が確認できます。ベゼルにはオリジナルのMK3インサートを装着。ブレスレットはフォールデッドリンクのダブルロック式オイスターブレスレットRef.9315、エンドリンク380の組み合わせで、クラスプに製造年刻印のない仕様です。
ケースにはわずかな使用傷が見られるものの、過度なポリッシュを感じさせない優れたプロポーションを維持しています。ラグとリューズガードには十分な厚みがあり、稜線も明瞭です。MK3ベゼルインサートは目立つ傷がなく、ブラックからブルーグレーへ均一に褪色しています。マットダイヤルの質感と各種プリントは鮮明で、針とインデックスの夜光は濃いパンプキンカラーへ自然に変化。ここまで深く、かつ均一に焼けた個体は稀少です。自動巻クロノメータームーブメントCal.1570を搭載し、弊社にて分解清掃済みです。
風防は、Ref.1680のために設計された段差のない煙突型アクリル風防です。仕入れ時に小傷が見られたため、弊社にて同型のNOS純正風防、パーツナンバー127へ交換しました。取り外した風防も付属します。高く垂直に立ち上がる独特の形状とサイクロップレンズが、Ref.1680特有の横顔を形成しています。MK5ダイヤル、MK3ベゼル、純正煙突型風防、Ref.9315ブレスレットが揃い、各部の保存状態にも優れた赤サブです。

This 1973 Rolex Submariner Ref.1680 is the model commonly known as the “Red Sub.” As the first Submariner reference to feature a date display, the Ref.1680 holds a distinctive place within the collection. This example is fitted with a “Feet First” MK5 dial, with the depth rating arranged as “660ft = 200m.” Generally associated with watches from around 1972 to 1973, the MK5 is distinguished by the red “SUBMARINER” signature printed directly onto the black dial without a white base layer. Further identifying details include the relatively closed form of the “660,” the rounded typography of “ft,” and the positioning of the individual lines of text. The bezel is fitted with an original MK3 insert. The folded-link Ref.9315 Oyster bracelet features a double-locking clasp and is paired with 380 end links; the clasp is undated.
The case shows only light signs of wear and retains excellent proportions, with no indication of excessive polishing. The lugs and crown guards remain substantial, with their edges clearly defined. The MK3 bezel insert is free from prominent marks and has faded evenly from black to a blue-grey tone. The matte dial retains its original texture, and the printing remains crisp. The lume on the hands and indexes has aged naturally to a deep pumpkin tone; examples with such rich and even patina are seldom encountered. The watch is powered by the automatic chronometer-rated Cal.1570. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.
The crystal is the seamless chimney-style acrylic type designed for the Ref.1680. As the crystal fitted when the watch was acquired showed minor scratches, we replaced it with a New Old Stock original crystal of the same type, part number 127. The removed crystal is also included. Its tall, vertical profile and Cyclops magnifier give the Ref.1680 its distinctive side view. With its MK5 dial, MK3 bezel insert, original chimney-style crystal, and Ref.9315 bracelet, this Red Sub combines a coherent set of period-correct components with an excellent overall state of preservation.
