JUVENIA Arithmo Automaticは、計算尺スケールを腕時計に取り入れた最初期のモデルとして知られる、1950年代の自動巻モデルです。Arithmoは1940年代に登場した計算尺ウォッチとして知られ、ブライトリングのChronomatとは異なり、クロノグラフではなく3針時計に計算機能を組み込んだ点が特徴です。大型のステンレススチールケースに、外周の回転式計算尺スケールと、視認性を高める独自形状のプラスチック風防を組み合わせています。ダイヤルはアラビア数字とバーインデックスを配したクラシカルな構成で、リーフハンドとセンターセコンドを備えます。ムーブメントは1950年代らしいバンパー式自動巻です。

ケースは使用に伴う小傷や経年の跡が見られますが、丸みを帯びたケースフォルムと長く伸びるラグの形状はしっかり残っています。ダイヤルは自然なエイジングが進み、外周スケールにも経年変化が見られますが、各目盛りと数字は読み取れる状態です。針とインデックスは焼けを伴いながらまとまりがあり、全体として当時の雰囲気をよく保っています。裏蓋にはJUVENIAの刻印が入り、ムーブメントにもブランド表記が確認できます。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

本機の魅力は、時計でありながら計算機としての性格を持つ、Arithmo独自の構造にあります。回転ベゼルは赤い基準線が12時位置へ重なると軽く止まる仕組みで、さらに回すと基準パーツをその位置に残したまま、計算尺スケールだけを回転させることができます。この機構は経年により軽いクリック感が失われている個体が少なくありませんが、本機では機能が残っており、Arithmoらしい操作感を楽しめます。大ぶりなケースサイズ、細かなスケール表示、クラシカルなダイヤルが重なり、1950年代の実用時計らしい面白さを感じられる一本です。

計算は、外周の回転スケールと内周の固定スケールを合わせて行います。掛け算では、外周の「10」または基準位置を内周の最初の数字に合わせ、内周の次の数字の位置で外周の答えを読み取ります。割り算では、外周の割られる数を内周の割る数に合わせ、内周の「10」の位置で答えを読み取ります。たとえば12×3の場合、基準を12に合わせ、3の位置で36を読むという考え方です。現在の電子計算機とは異なりますが、当時の技術者や実務家が腕元で概算を行うための、非常に実用的な機能でした。

The JUVENIA Arithmo Automatic is a self-winding model from the 1950s, known as one of the earliest wristwatches to incorporate a slide-rule scale. First introduced in the 1940s, the Arithmo differs from the Breitling Chronomat in that it integrates a calculation function into a three-hand watch rather than a chronograph. Its large stainless steel case is fitted with a rotating slide-rule scale and a distinctively shaped acrylic crystal designed to improve legibility. The classically arranged dial combines Arabic numerals with baton indexes, leaf hands, and central seconds. Inside is a bumper automatic movement typical of the period.

The case shows minor scratches and signs of age, though its rounded profile and long, extended lugs remain well defined. The dial has developed natural aging, as has the outer scale, but the numerals and graduations remain legible. The hands and indexes show consistent patination, preserving the watch’s original period character. The caseback bears the JUVENIA signature, which is also present on the movement. A defining feature of the Arithmo is its dual identity as both a wristwatch and a calculating instrument. When the red reference line reaches 12 o’clock, the rotating bezel is designed to come to a light stop. Turning it further allows the slide-rule scale to rotate while the reference marker remains in position. On many surviving examples, this subtle clicking action has been lost through age and wear; on this watch, however, the mechanism remains functional, preserving the distinctive operating feel of the Arithmo. Its generous case size, finely detailed scales, and classical dial capture the practical ingenuity of 1950s watchmaking.

Calculations are performed by aligning the rotating outer scale with the fixed inner scale. For multiplication, the outer “10,” or reference position, is aligned with the first number on the inner scale, and the result is read from the outer scale opposite the second number. For division, the dividend on the outer scale is aligned with the divisor on the inner scale, and the result is read at the inner “10.” For example, to calculate 12 × 3, the reference point is aligned with 12, and 36 is read opposite 3. Though unlike a modern electronic calculator, this was a highly practical tool that allowed engineers and other professionals of the period to make approximate calculations directly from the wrist.
