50年間作られたスペードマスターだからこそ、マイナーチェンジを繰り返した経緯があり、細かなディティールの変化を見つける楽しみがあります。それがロングセラーの理由のひとつ。スピードマスターの中では製造期間の長い方であった5thですが、ステップダイアルを備えているものと拘ると年式がぐっと狭まります。立体感のあるダイアルと、ツイストラグのコンビネーションはムーンウォッチでしか味わえない意匠です。ケースバックのシーホースがメダリオンではなく刻印なのも、ヴィンテージスピードマスターならではの意匠。ハンサムな1171ブレスが付属するのも嬉しいポイントです。

ケースは全体に使用傷が入り、無骨な雰囲気が増しています。変な磨きは入っておらず、ケースラインは良いままを保っています。ベゼルのエイジングは軽度です。厳正に判断しますと、角度を付けて覗くことによりブラックの色味がわずかにフェードしていることが確認できます。ダイアルはパーフェクトです。気になるような傷、エイジング等一切ありません。ルミナスはエイジングにより良い色味をしています。ヴィンテージ時計ならではの醍醐味です。ビデオを掲載していますので、是非ご覧ください。

キャリバーはレマニア社製のCal,321をベースとしたCal.861を搭載しています。NASAの規定にはじめて合格したことでも有名なCal,321は非常に完成度の高い機械としてその名を残しています。そのためCal.861も含め、OMEGAが長年使用してきたブランドを代表する機械が搭載されている点も忘れてはいけないポイントです。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

With a production span of 50 years, the Speedmaster has undergone numerous minor changes, offering enthusiasts the delight of discovering subtle variations in detail. This is one of the reasons behind its enduring popularity. Among Speedmasters, the 5th model, although having one of the longest production periods, becomes much narrower in terms of years when focusing on those with a stepped dial. The combination of a three-dimensional dial and twisted lugs is a design feature unique to the Moonwatch. The Seahorse engraving on the case back being an inscription rather than a medallion is a characteristic unique to vintage Speedmasters. The inclusion of the handsome 1171 bracelet is also a delightful addition.

The case bears overall signs of use, lending it a rugged charm. There are no odd polish marks, and the case lines remain intact. The aging of the bezel is mild. Upon close examination, a slight fading of the black hue can be observed when viewed at an angle. The dial is flawless, devoid of any scratches or aging. The movement is equipped with the Cal.861, based on the renowned Lemania Cal.321, famous for being the first movement to pass NASA's stringent criteria. Therefore, it's essential not to forget that Cal.861, along with Cal.321, represents the pinnacle of the machinery that OMEGA has been using for years.

While today the equation "Speedmaster equals Space" is immediately recognizable, it's important to note that in its early days, the Speedmaster was born purely as a motorsports watch with no connection to space. Additionally, the Speedmaster is known as the first watch in the world to feature a tachymeter on the external bezel rather than the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor change, transitioning to a black aluminum base for the bezel and changing the needle shape from arrow to alpha, improving visibility. NASA was seeking a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the harsh environment of space, and the Speedmaster, having triumphed over numerous contenders, was officially adopted as the space watch. It's a well-known story that the Speedmaster was worn during the first manned moon landing in 1969.
