60年以上もの間作られたスピードマスターだからこそ、マイナーチェンジを繰り返した経緯があり、細かなディティールの変化を見つける楽しみがあります。1998年製のムーンウォッチはCal.1861を積んでいます。シースルーバックのベーシックな手巻式は、現行では見られない黄金メッキ仕様の機械がシースルーの裏蓋から見えるのが特徴。この年式では珍しいトリチウムを採用したスピードマスターで、ヴィンテージウォッチならではの表情が特徴です。当時の箱、ギャランティー、余りコマが付属するコレクタブルな一品。

ダイアルはパーフェクトです。気になるような傷やダメージは見当たりません。針のホワイトプリントはエイジングがなく、当時のままを保っています。濃いめのベージュに焼けたトリチウムは均一で、稀に見る美しいエイジング。針は交換されることなく、当時物が付いております。ケースは研磨歴の感じられないもので、小傷はありますが気になるへこみは見られません。ダメージの表れやすいベゼルは黒々としており、瑞々しさを感じます。作動している様子をビデオにて確認できますので、是非ご覧ください。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

Initially conceived as a pure motor racing watch with no connection to space, the Speedmaster made history by being the first watch to display a tachymeter on the external bezel instead of the dial. In 1959, it underwent a minor change, adopting an aluminum black bezel base and transitioning from arrow hands to alpha hands, enhancing visibility. NASA sought a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of space, and the Speedmaster triumphed over formidable competitors, becoming the official space watch. The iconic moment occurred in 1969 when, during the first moon landing, the Speedmaster was famously worn by an astronaut.
